Qinwen Zheng vs Ekaterina Alexandrova prediction
Qinwen Zheng continued her winning streak on clay but didn’t have things all her own way against Elise Mertens, eventually coming through 6-3 3-6 6-3. Her serve deserted her in the second set, with just a 39% first serve percentage but she got things in order in the final set, with her first serve improving to 70% and getting the job done.
The Chinese advances to her third quarter-final in a row on the WTA Tour and now faces Ekaterina Alexandrova. Alexandrova thrashed sixth seed Diana Shnaider 6-2 6-1 in a dominant performance to reach her first quarter-final since the Linz Open two months ago, where she ended up reaching the final.
Alexandrova does lead the head-to-head 2-0, with both matches being on clay. Their first meeting was at this event three years ago, with Zheng retiring in the third set at 5-2 down. They then faced each other at the Madrid Open in 2023, with Alexandrova recovering from a set down to advance.
Nevertheless, Zheng is a much-improved player on the WTA Tour, and one of the most feared opponents on clay after her singles victory at the Paris Olympics. We’re predicting her to come through.
