Polina Kudermetova advanced to the second-round of the Australian Open after a straight sets win over Guiomar Zuleta De Reales. The pair exchanged breaks at the start of the match, but Kudermetova dominated after that, winning 6-2 6-3 to pick up her first ever victory at the tournament, after two previously failed attempts.
She faces 14th seed Clara Tauson next. The Dane finally picked up her first singles victory of the new season after comfortably getting past Dalma Galfi. She was not broken on serve and won an impressive 88% of her first serve points, wrapping up a 6-3 6-3 win after just an hour and eight minutes. Tauson had retired from her previous match in Adelaide but seemed to be moving freely here.
Tauson is ranked over 130 places higher than Kudermetova. She is a dangerous player when healthy and she’ll be expected to come through this second-round match in straight sets.
