Anna Kalinskaya will have designs on a return to the world’s top 20 with a solid run in Rome.

The Russian has tumbled down the rankings of late but did post a tidy surge to the quarter-finals on the dirt of Charleston to suggest she may be finding her feet again. 

The 28th seed meets world number 42 Peyton Stearns who is also hoping for a milestone by cracking the top 40 for the first time. 

The American beat Italian wildcard Nuria Brancaccio 6-3 6-2 in the first round and enjoyed a strong run to the round of 16 in Madrid where she was only stopped by eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka. 

Stearns and Kalinskaya have met once before in a tight contest that went to a final set before the American retired in Beijing last year. 

It’s likely to be another tough tussle on court Pietrangeli that may well go the distance.
