Petra Marcinko is at her highest ranking of 77 in the world on the eve of the Australian Open. She won her first match of the season against Camila Osorio in Auckland but then lost heavily to Alexandra Eala. She failed to qualify for the Hobart International last week, but the 20-year-old has been steadily improving, stretching back to last season.
Tatjana Maria is her opponent. She beat fellow veteran Venus Williams in the first-round of Hobart but then lost to Anna Bondar. Her first event of the year was a straight sets defeat to youngster Emerson Jones in round one of the Brisbane International.
Maria won their only meeting at the start of last year in Bengaluru, but Marcinko is a better player now and will be confident of a victory. It’s a case of youth against experience, but Maria has not looked particularly convincing in her opening tournaments and could be in trouble here.
