Alexandra Eala hit the comeback trail to down Donna Vekic and reach the round of 16 in her opener in Auckland.

The fourth seed dug deep to triumph 4-6 6-4 6-4 against the Olympic silver medallist in a high-class first round tussle. 

Eala will now meet another Croatian in the shape of fellow 20-year-old Petra Marcinko, who won a topsy-turvy encounter with Camila Osorio 6-4 0-6 7-6. 

This is their first meeting but it’s hard to look beyond Eala who has already beaten Croatia’s number one and should have too much consistency and top level know-how for the world number 82.
