Panna Udvardy made it through to the second-round at the Canadian Open as her opponent Eva Lys was forced to retire in the deciding set. Lys had dominated the majority of the match, as she won the first set with ease and went 5-2 up in the second. However, she failed to serve out the match and Udvardy levelled the encounter by winning a tiebreak. Lys decided that she could not continue after the Hungarian went 2-0 up in the third set.
She will face Naomi Osaka, who is close to breaking into the top 10 of the world rankings once again. She enjoyed her best run at Wimbledon last month, reaching the quarter-finals before a defeat to Karolina Muchova. The four-time Grand Slam champion then won two matches at the Washington Open to advance to the semi-finals, where she was defeated by Alexandra Eala.
Osaka reached the final of the Canadian Open last year, and she remains one of the top players to beat on this surface. Udvardy is a clear underdog in this one.
