Panna Udvardy, a qualifier who only reached the main draw at Monterrey due to being a ‘lucky loser’ took out Australian Maya Joint in two sets, setting up a meeting with Elise Mertens who is a player desperate for a deep tournament run right now after early exits in Montreal and Cincinnati. Since her run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, Mertens seems to have struggled with the transition from grass to hard court and with a number of matches now under her belt, will hope things finally click together.

Udvardy got better as she went on vs Joint, growing in confidence the longer the Hungarian spent on the court. She’s more than capable of matching up to an under-par Mertens and forcing this one to go the distance. Whilst Mertens is the favourite, she’s not playing well enough to cruise through and backing three sets to be played looks a worthwhile move.
