Oliver Tarvet earned a debut appearance at a Grand Slam after winning all three of his matches in Wimbledon qualifying. It was a stunning week for the world number 719, who is the lowest ranked player in the men’s draw. He beat Belgium’s Alexander Blockx in four sets in the final stage of qualifying and can now look forward to a first-round match at the All England Club.
Leandro Rieldi will be his opponent in the first-round as the world number 506 also advanced through qualifying. The Swiss defeated Great Britain’s Hamish Stewart in four sets to enter the main draw of a major for the first time. Riedli was ranked as high as 117 in the world and does have a win on the ATP Tour, while he also has four Challenger Tour titles to his name. This includes a win in the final of the BW Open over 2022 Cincinnati Open champion Borna Coric in January last year.
Tarvet has performed unbelievably to make it through to the main draw, but Riedi does have more pedigree and will be the favourite to make it through over the Brit.
