Oleksandra Oliynykova is ranked 90 in the world, with the Ukrainian having grinded her way through the ITF and lower-tier circuits, winning a WTA 125 title in Chile last year and posting a solid 57-19 overall win-loss record across all levels. She is yet to make a breakthrough at a Grand Slam, but she has shown recent consistency and will relish the opportunity of facing a big name in the first-round.
That big name is Madison Keys, who returns to the scene of her greatest triumph as the defending champion. The American defeated Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka back-to-back to claim her maiden Grand Slam title last year and is aiming to defend her crown in Melbourne. Keys’ preparation has not gone all her own way, as the American struggled with an injury towards the backend of 2025 and failed to get through to the semi-finals of either tournament in Brisbane and Adelaide earlier this month.
Keys has not been at her best so far, but she is the firm favourite to come through this in straight sets.
