Oleksandra Oliynykova put in a dominant performance in the first round as she defeated Russian qualifier Elena Pridankina in just 15 games. The Ukrainian, who has previously represented Croatia, reached the first round of the Australian Open earlier this year but has never made it as far as the second round at a Grand Slam before.
Kimberly Birrell heads into this one on the back of a dramatic and shock defeat of number five seed Jessica Pegula the other day. Pegula romped a 6-1 win in the first set against Birrell before the Aussie came from behind to win back-to-back nine-game sets. Birrell hasn’t won at a full WTA event since the first round of the Indian Wells Open.
Birrell enjoyed a reasonable beginning to this year but her win the other day is a major standout, albeit up against a massively improving Oliynykova, this is a tough test.
