Oleksandra Oliynykova has not featured since her withdrawal from the Hamburg Open before her quarter-final match with Elina Avanesyan. This was preceded by a steady run to the semi-finals of the Iasi Open. The Ukrainian only recently made her debut in the top 50 of the world rankings.
Her opponent in Toronto is former world number one Karolina Pliskova. The Czech reached the final of the Canadian Open five years ago, losing to Camila Giorgi. Pliskova has enjoyed a resurgence this season following a long spell out with injuries, with credible runs in Rome and Madrid backed up by a semi-final appearance at the Nottingham Open. She was dealt a tough draw at Wimbledon as she lost in the second-round to defending champion Iga Swiatek.
Pliskova can still trouble players and she has enough quality to get past Oliynykova, with the latter having played just one match on an outdoor hard court this year.
