Oksana Selekhmeteva is ranked just inside the top 100 in the world ahead of the first major of the year. She started her season in Brisbane but could not make it out of qualifying after a defeat to Taylah Preston. She was able to do so in Hobart after wins over Panna Udvardy and Petra Marcinko, but she would still lose in round one to Magda Linette in three sets.
Ella Seidel is her first-round opponent. She lost in the second-round of the Auckland Open to Sonay Kartal and followed that up with a heavy defeat to Anna Bondar in the first-round of Hobart, though she did win both of her qualifying matches.
Seidel comes into this match as the higher-ranked player and the favourite, but she will hope to rediscover last year’s level soon, with the German having reached three WTA quarter-finals in 2025 and got through to the round-of-16 in Cincinnati.
