Okesana Selekhmeteva booked her place in round two of the Australian Open after a three set win over Ella Seidel. The Russian went an early break down but reeled off seven games in a row to take the first set and go 2-0 up in the second. Seidel fought back with two breaks of her own to force a decider but fell away as Selekhmeteva sealed a 6-3 3-6 6-0 win after one hour and 47 minutes.
She will now face Paula Badosa in round two. The Spaniard broke on four occasions as she won 6-2 6-4 against Zarina Diyas. Badosa suffered from an injury-hit 2025 but made the semi-finals of this event last year, losing to world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the last four.
The former world number two has the greater experience and pedigree in this matchup and should be able to record another straight sets win in Melbourne.
