Nuno Borges won his first two matches of the year at the Hong Kong Open to advance to the quarter-finals. He defeated Damir Dzumhur in straight sets and did the same in the second-round against former Grand Slam champion Marin Cilic. His run would end in the last eight as he lost to Andrey Rublev 6-3 6-4.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry is his first-round opponent. The Argentine also competed in Hong Kong to start his 2026 campaign. He got past Valentin Royer in straight sets to advance from the first-round. He performed well against top seed Lorenzo Musetti in his next match, taking the first set on a tiebreak, but he would go on to lose in three.
Both players will take some encouragement from their performance levels last week ahead of this event and the first major of the year in Melbourne. The higher-ranked Borges is a clever player and will start as the favourite.
