Nuno Borges picked up a much-needed victory in round one of the Shanghai Masters as he defeated Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets. He was broken when serving for the first set at 5-4 but still won it in a close tiebreak. He failed to convert one break point in the seventh game of the second as the set went to another tiebreak and it mirrored the first, as Borges acquired seven points to five.
Stefanos Tsitsipas’ season has been on a downward spiral for quite some time, and the two-time Grand Slam finalist is now outside the top 20 of the world rankings. He was defeated by Daniel Altmaier in the second-round of the US Open and then lost to Joao Fonseca in the Davis Cup despite being 5-3 up in the deciding set. He has also struggled with a lower back injury during this campaign.
Tsitsipas leads the head-to-head 2-0 but both matches were on his favoured clay. His incredibly inconsistent season makes this a hard match to call, and this may head into a deciding set.
