Nuno Borges’ poor form continued as he crashed out of the Cincinnati Open in the first-round following a straight sets defeat to Arthur Rinderknech. He has just one victory from his last five matches and also lost in round one of the Swedish Open last month, despite entering the tournament as the defending champion. Borges can still be competitive on this surface, evidenced by his run to the semi-finals of the Auckland Open in early January. He enters this tournament as the seventh seed and received a bye in round one.
Kamil Majchrzak continued his good form with a straight sets win over Nicolas Jarry in the first-round. The Pole saved a set point in the a tight first set tiebreak, taking it 8-6. Majchrzak broke the Jarry serve for the first time in the seventh service game of the second set to win 7-6 6-4. He did not face a break point throughout the entire match and has now won six matches in a row following his title on the Challenger Tour a little over a week ago.
Borges leads the head-to-head 1-0 but this is their first match on a hard court. Majchrzak is enjoying his best run of form this season and could spring a surprise against a struggling Borges.
