Nuno Borges has not managed to get a run together since his third-round appearance at Wimbledon. He failed to defend his title in Bastad as he lost in the second-round after receiving a bye, and has since picked up just one victory at his next three tournaments in Toronto, Cincinnati and Winston-Salem. The Portuguese number one’s best result of the season was right at the start of the year in Auckland when he made the last four.
Brandon Holt is his opponent in the first-round of the US Open. He has featured in just two events in the space of the last month and was unable to win a match as he lost in round one of both Cincinnati and Winston-Salem. Holt does have two titles on the Challenger Tour but he is seeking consistency at Grand Slams, having never picked up a win at a major.
Borges has not enjoyed the hard court preparation he would have liked ahead of this major, but he is still a strong favourite to defeat Holt and make it through to the next round.
