Novak Djokovic got his new season off to a winning start in the singles as he overcame local favourite Rinky Hijikata 6-3 6-3. There is every chance he will not overly-exert himself in this tournament as he will use it to tune up and get ready for the Australian Open but that should still be enough to beat most players.
He faces Gael Monfils in the round of 16 who beat talented young American Nishesh Basavareddy 6-4 4-6 6-1. That will have given him quite the boost given how highly-rated Basavareddy is. He now faces an incredibly tough assignment however made all the greater by the previous encounters with Djokovic.
37-year-old Djokovic and 38-year-old Monfils have played 19 times before on the ATP Tour and incredibly it is the Serbian legend who has won all 19 of those matches. Monfils did however win a Challenger match back in 2004 – over 20 years ago – but he has come unstuck on the ATP Tour every time to Djokovic.
It is hard to make a case for Monfils reversing that at this stage of his career and expect Djokovic to win and likely in straight sets.
