Novak Djokovic makes his return to the ATP Tour in Athens, having already confirmed his involvement in Turin for the World Tour Finals next week. The 24-time Grand Slam champion last played competitively in Shanghai and looked on course for another Masters title until his run was ended by Valentin Vacherot in the semi-finals. Djokovic will be aiming for his second title of the season.
He faces Alejandro Tabilo after receiving a bye as the top seed. The Chilean came through a tight first-round match against Adam Walton to advance. Tabilo had a match point in the second set tiebreak which was subsequently saved by Walton, who went on to force a decider. A dramatic third set saw Walton serve for the match, but Tabilo broke twice, reeling off three straight games to win 7-6 (7) 6-7 (6) 7-5 after three hours and two minutes.
Remarkably, Tabilo leads the head-to-head 2-0 and has never dropped a set to Djokovic, winning their encounters at the 2024 Italian Open and at this year’s Monte-Carlo Masters. Nevertheless, the Serb will be fully expected to notch up his first win over the Chilean here.
