Nikoloz Basilashvili continued his run in Brussels as the qualifier got past Quentin Halys in straight sets. He was not broken on serve and saved six break points in total as he wrapped up a 6-4 6-4 win after an hour and 22 minutes.
He will now play Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The Frenchman powered down a staggering 39 aces as he beat Emil Ruusouvri in three sets. There were no breaks of serve in the match until the third game of the deciding set, with Mpetshi Perricard coming through to win 7-6 6-7 6-4. Mpetshi Perricard has not enjoyed a good season but his recent form does show signs of promise, having made the round-of-16 in Shanghai last week, which included a win over world number four Taylor Fritz.
This will be their first ATP match but they did face each other earlier in the season on the Challenger Tour, with Mpetshi Perricard beating Basilashvili in the final of an event in Bordeaux. Mpetshi Perricard’s serve is such a weapon indoors and that alone could prove to be the difference as he aims for a quarter-final berth.
