Nikola Bartunkova continued her excellent recent form with a dominant victory over Mayar Sherif in the opening round. The 20-year-old Czech did not face a single break point, won 86% of her second serve points and converted four of 12 break point opportunities on return. She won 6-1 6-2. Bartunkova arrived in New York after reaching the Monterrey Open semi-finals, beating Antonia Ruzic, En-Shuo Liang and Darja Vidmanova before eventually losing in three sets to Elise Mertens.

Tatjana Maria produced an impressive comeback in round one, recovering from a set down to eliminate Jelena Ostapenko. The 39-year-old completely dominated sets two and three to win 4-6 6-1 6-2 against the 30th seed.

Maria’s low-bouncing slice, changes of pace and willingness to attack the net can frustrate opponents who prefer consistent baseline rhythm. Bartunkova, however, possesses greater weight of shot and enters this match having won four of her last five matches.
