Nicolas Jarry had a rather disappointing clay court season in South America, with an early defeat at the Argentina Open by Diego Schwartzman followed by a loss at the round of 16 stage to Francisco Comesana in Rio.

He then suffered a surprise defeat at his home event in Chile, losing in three sets to Camilo Ugo in the second round having received a bye at the earlier stage. Jarry didn’t compete during the Sunshine Double and will hope for far better results during the European clay court season.

Chris O’Connell got his clay court campaign off to a fine start with a straight-sets win over Dusan Lajovic. The Australian created 11 break point opportunities during the match and now can look forward to a second-round match against Jarry.

O’Connell is in the better form of the two despite his lower ranking and leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a straight sets win over Jarry in the first round of the US Open last year. He could push Jarry all the way and we see this one going the distance.
