Nicolas Arseneault vs Alexei Popyrin prediction
Nicolas Arseneault recorded a win on his ATP Tour debut with a straight sets win over Valentin Royer. The 18-year-old wildcard broke the Frenchman’s serve on four separate occasions as he wrapped up a 6-4 7-6 win after an hour and 43 minutes.
Alexei Popyrin returns as the defending champion. He became the first Australian since Lleyton Hewitt in 2003 to win a Masters event when he defeated Andrey Rublev in the final last year. Popyrin was ranked 62 in the world when he won the title, but he’s the 18th seed this time around. However, his recent form has been largely disappointing – a surprise first-round loss to Great Britain’s Arthur Fery at Wimbledon was followed up by a three set defeat to Wu Yibing in Washington.
Despite his struggles over the past few weeks, Popyrin will be looking to make a statement as he aims to defend his crown, and it should start off with a straight-forward victory against the unproven Arseneault.
