The situation is simple for Nathan Aspinall in Sheffield; beat Michael van Gerwen and he is through to the Premier League play-offs for the third time in his career. He could still make it to the O2 if he loses this quarter-final, but he would then be relying on others defeating the Dutchman later in the evening.

Aspinall, who could still finish third come the end of the evening, went all the way in Aberdeen last week to put him in the driving seat ahead of the culmination of the league stage.

Van Gerwen, on the other hand, has lost at the first hurdle in each of the last two weeks in the Premier League, and faces the prospect of finishing outside the top four for only the second time in his 13 participations.

The Dutchman not only has to defeat Aspinall, but also win the whole night if he is to usurp his opponent in fourth place.
