Two-time Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka was not at her best but did advance to the next round of the competition after a three set win over Antonia Ruzic. Despite being pegged back in the first set, Osaka would go in front after breaking the Ruzic serve for the second time. However, the Croatian broke at the start of the second and that proved to be the difference as the match headed to a decider. Osaka looked to be close to a shock exit as Ruzic broke to go 4-3 up, only for the four-time Grand Slam champion to reel off the final three games and seal a 6-3 3-6 6-4 win.
She will face Sorana Cirstea next. The Romanian, who is playing in her last Australian Open, made sure her journey in Melbourne would continue for at least another match as she impressively came from a set down to beat Eva Lys. The German led by a set and a break point at one stage, but Cirstea’s experience and quality saw her stage a comeback.
Osaka was shaky at times in her first-round match, though she will always be competitive with that serve of hers. Cirstea can be a tricky opponent and will ask questions of the 28-year-old.
