Naomi Osaka fought back in her first-round match to book her place into the next stage of the Wuhan Open. She lost the first set to Leylah Fernandez and edged a tight second, before grabbing a crucial break at the start of the decider and consolidating it to win 4-6 7-5 6-3 after two hours and 30 minutes. This victory was vital for the four-time Grand Slam champion, as she had already suffered an early loss at the China Open to Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
She now faces Linda Noskova. The 20-year-old, who reached the first WTA 1000 event of her career just last week in Beijing, dug deep to get past Yulia Putintseva in round one. Noskova had the chance to seal victory in straight sets but was broken at 5-3 in the second, with Putintseva winning the next three games to force a decider. Noskova failed to serve out again in the third set but controlled the tiebreak to win 6-4 4-6 7-6.
Both players will hope to improve in the second-round, but there’s every possibility that the number of matches may be taking their toll on Noskova. Osaka’s playing style suits these conditions in Wuhan and she will need to be aggressive from the start.
