ROGERIO BONTORIN VS MANEL KAPE LOWDOWN
When Rogerio Bontorin (16-4(2)) extended his record to 16-1(1) by knocking out Raulian Paiva (2019) in his second UFC fight, he had future flyweight contender written all over him. However, he has gone 0-3(1) since. He lost a unanimous decision to Ray Borg (2020) before getting knocked out by Kai Kara-France (2021). He actually went on to win a unanimous decision over Matt Schnell, but it was overturned to a ‘no contest’ after a failed drugs test. Turns out he was consuming a tainted supplement and after serving a shortened ban, he returned for another tough match-up in Brandon Royval (2022) losing a split decision.
Manel Kape (17-6) was given a very tough start to his UFC career. After three knockouts for Rizin he got the call-up and eventually made his debut against top contender Alexandre Pantoja (2021) losing a unanimous decision. He was then paired with the currently #7 ranked Matheus Nicolau (2021) falling on the wrong side of a split decision. However, he fought twice more last year displaying the killer instinct that got him to the UFC by dispatching Ode Osbourne with a flying knee and burying Zhalgas Zhumagulov in the first round.
ROGERIO BONTORIN VS MANEL KAPE PREDICTION
Kape has the firepower, but he will need to approach this more strategically. Bontorin is very well-rounded and will keep up a pace for three rounds, so Kape will need a plan B if he cannot find the knockout.
He is clearly more than capable of putting the Brazilian to sleep, but he is a slow starter and cannot afford to give away a couple rounds. If this stays on the feet and Kape has a higher output, we would back him to eventually get the knockout.
However, if he starts slow and allows Bontorin to land takedowns in the first round he will be chasing the fight and begin to drain the gas tank trying to find the knockout blow. So, as the underdog, the smart money is on Bontorin for a submission or decision.
A Kape knockout is likely, but if this goes past the first round, we back the Brazilian could pull off the upset.
