JULIAN MARQUEZ VS DERON WINN LOWDOWN
Julian Marquez (9-3) has been in the UFC for over five years now but has only fought five times. That said, all of his fights have been exciting earning three performance bonuses. Two of those came when he submitted Maki Pitolo (2021) and Sam Alvey (2021) but he then walked into the fire of Gregory Rodrigues and got knocked out in the first round.
Deron Winn (7-3) has also struggled for consistency. He is one of the best wrestlers in the middleweight even though he is a natural a welterweight. He is 1-3 in his last four losing a split decision to Darren Stewart (2019) and getting submitted by Gerald Meerschaert (2020). He managed to outpoint the much larger Antonio Arroyo (2020) but is coming off his most devastating loss which was a second-round TKO to Phil Hawes back in June.
JULIAN MARQUEZ VS DERON WINN PREDICTION
We know what to expect from Winn and that will be to close the distance with his boxing and pounce on a leg for a takedown. He has the wrestling to dominate a lot of middleweights however, Marquez is a good wrestler himself and is a lot bigger.
Marquez will boast an eight-inch height and two-inch reach advantage. His fight IQ is suspect, but he knows he has to defend the takedowns. Winn is not a knockout threat but if Marquez keeps defending punches with his face, Winn can catch him and clamp on a takedown.
That said, we expect Marquez to come in prepared and use his size and strength to defend the takedowns, hurt Winn on the feet to create a scramble where he could finish the knockout or jump on a submission.
