Mirra Andreeva’s hopes of going back-to-back in Dubai are going to be seriously put to the test by Amanda Anisimova.
The 2025 champion held firm to see off Jaqueline Cristian 7-5 6-3 to reach the last eight having played just one match while Anisimova crushed Janice Tjen 6-1 6-3.
This will be their second meeting and it is sure to be a heavyweight encounter with high-octane baseline exchanges galore.
Anisimova emerged triumphant when they met in Miami last year, clinching a 7-6 2-6 6-3 success.
The second seed was the slight underdog on that occasion but her charge to back-to-back major finals at Wimbledon and the US Open last year has propelled her beyond the teenage Mirra in the rankings.
The initial thought is that it may well go three again, but there’s also a chance Andreeva may be slightly undercooked in terms of this week’s action and fully adapting to the conditions.
If Anisimova brings her A-game her power off both wings may give her the edge and that could spell problems for Andreeva’s title defence, but expect it to be close.
