Rising star Michael Zheng, who came through qualifying, had a Grand Slam debut to remember with the 21-year-old American holding off compatriot Sebastian Korda's comeback to win in five sets.
Zheng's victory over the former world number 15 will have put him in a strong mindset as he prepares to take on the 32nd seed in the second round.
Corentin Moutet overcame a partisan crowd to defeat Australia's Tristan Schoolkate with relative ease, winning in straight sets in the first round.
The Frenchman did not play any warm-up tournaments prior to the Australian Open but looked sharp against Schoolkate, and will now seek a third-round berth in Melbourne for the second year in succession.
This is the first ever meeting between the two players and, although the higher-ranked Moutet is the favourite, Zheng is a dangerous player who is operating with confidence so we expect over 3.5 sets.
