Mees Rottgering won his firs tour-level match after defeating Jan Choinski in the first-round of the Winston-Salem Open. The teenager took the lead, but Choinski completely dominated the second set and went 2-0 up in the decider. Rottgering fought back to win six of the next eight games as he clinched a 7-5 2-6 6-4 victory after two hours and 10 minutes.

He now faces Tomas Machac. The Czech made his return from injury at the Cincinnati Open, losing in straight sets to Pablo Carreno Busta. Machac’s season began strongly as he won the title in Adelaide right at the start of the year, but fitness problems have taken their toll on him yet again. His ranking has dropped to 58 in the world.

He still deserves to be the favourite because of his far greater experience at this level, but there is enough uncertainty surrounding his current level to avoid backing a routine victory.
