McCartney Kessler came from a set and a break down to beat Cristina Bucsa and advance to the round-of-16 in Tokyo. Kessler was broken early on and lost the first set, before Bucsa opened up a 2-0 lead in the second to go further ahead. The American regrouped well to stage a comeback in the second and race ahead in the third to win 3-6 7-5 6-3.

Linda Noskova is the sixth seed in Tokyo and begins her campaign at this stage after receiving a bye in the first-round. She competed in Osaka last week but lost in the first-round after going down to Katie Boulter in straight sets. This followed a third-round exit in Wuhan, but the Czech did make strides in Beijing as she reached the first WTA 1000 final of her career. The 20-year-old is now inside the top 20 of the world rankings.

The head-to-head is tied at 1-1. Noskova won their first meeting in Melbourne last year, with Kessler getting the better of her opponent in Miami earlier on this season. Both were three set matches, and this could also be close, but Noskova’s solid hard court game and strong campaign overall give her the edge.
