McCartney Kessler is in danger of dropping out the top 50 of the world rankings as she begins her Canadian Open campaign. The American’s North American hard court swing did not get off to a strong start as she was beaten in the opening round by Renata Zarazua in straight sets at the Memphis Open. She has reached three tour-level quarter-finals this season, but she is yet to advance beyond that stage in 2026.
Her first-round opponent is Cadence Brace, with the Canadian receiving a wildcard at her home event. The 21-year-old is ranked outside of the world’s top 250. Brace also competed in Memphis last week, losing her first-round match to Zeynep Sonmez in three sets. That was her second tour-level main draw match of the campaign, as she also suffered a first-round exit at the Merida Open earlier in the year.
Kessler will be expected to come through this match in straight sets.
