McCartney Kessler defeated Elise Mertens for the second time this season to advance to round three of the China Open. The American broke at the start of the first set and recovered from a 4-2 deficit in the second to reel off four games in a row and seal a 6-2 6-4 win after one hour and 15 minutes.
She will face two-time Grand Slam singles champion Barbora Krejcikova in the next stage of the tournament after the Czech continued her strong run of form with a fine win over Ekaterina Alexandrova. Alexandrova had just made the final of the Korea Open but she was no match for Krejcikova, who broke on four separate occasions to win 7-5 6-2.
There are just five places separating the pair in the world rankings. Krejcikova is enjoying her best run of form since returning from injury in the spring and deserves to be seen as the favourite for this one.
