She battled her way through her first two matches in three-sets, and Kessler has already shown her quality on tour this season having made the final of the ATX Open.
Unfortunately for her, Kessler would lose to Jessica Pegula but she goes into this event as one of the top seeded players and will fancy her chances at a deep run as part of her clay court preparations.
Fiona Ferro will be her opponent in round one, as she made it through two qualifying rounds. Ferro has been plagued by injuries throughout her career and has not played on the tour for over nine months. She makes her return against Kessler but it is likely to be a bridge too far for the 28-year-old.
