Maya Joint won her first-round match after edging past Zhu Lin in two tight sets. The 19-year-old broke at the end of the first set to go in front, with the second going to a tiebreak. In a lengthy breaker, Joint saved one break point and secured victory on her fifth match point, winning 7-5 7-6 (8) overall. The Australian has won the first two titles of her career this season and is ranked inside the top 40.
Katerina Siniakova picked up a fine win in round one as she defeated Diana Shnaider.
