Despite a hugely promising first round win over Washington Open champion Leylah Fernandez, Maya Joint failed to back that up in the Canadian Open second round, going down in three sets to McCartney Kessler. After a straight-sets win in round one of Cincinnati against Belgian Greet Minnen, Joint now turns her attention to Beatriz Haddad Maia.
The Brazilian has had time to recompose herself and perhaps enjoy a much-needed result following an early exit in Montreal at the hands of Suzan Lamens and the expectation is that we’ll see a much better showing from her here. If Haddad Maia is at her best, she should prove too strong for Joint, but cannot afford the number of double faults we saw from the 29-year-old against Lamens. That powerful serve needs to be utilised correctly.
Haddad Maia has the better all-round game and that should be noticeable over the course of this match. Although Joint is a battler, backing the former to advance through has to be favoured in this contest.
