Mattia Bellucci picked up a title on the Challenger Tour this month in Sumter, winning all four of his matches without the drop of a set. He decided to compete in Winston-Salem just a day after his win, but ran out of steam in the second-round against Jaume Munar. His best result on the ATP Tour this season saw him reach the semi-finals in Rotterdam, beating Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Juncheng Shang is now ranked 108 in the world. He is continuing his comeback this season after foot surgery at the start of the year kept him out of action for several months. He made his official return in Toronto, losing in the first-round against Christopher O’Connell. Shang then competed in Cincinnati but was once again on the end of a defeat in round one, despite taking the first set against Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
There is still a question mark over Shang’s fitness, especially over a five set match. Bellucci is in decent enough form and should be viewed as the clear favourite.
