Mattia Bellucci advanced to the next round after his opponent Juncheng Shang retired in the fourth set of their match. The Italian was leading 7-6 1-6 6-3 3-0. Shang had already spent months away from the tour due to injury. Bellucci won a title on the Challenger Tour earlier this month in Sumter, but could only make the second-round of the Winston-Salem Open a week later.
Carlos Alcaraz was focused from the get-go as he beat big serving Reilly Opelka in three sets to get his campaign off and running. The Spaniard was not broken and won 86% of his points on first serve as he won 6-4 7-5 6-4. Despite Opelka’s serve, Alcaraz still produced 11 break point chances, taking three of those. He has now won 55 matches on the tour this season.
Alcaraz met his end at this stage of last year’s US Open in a shock defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp, but he seems in a much better place at this year’s tournament. The five-time Grand Slam champion is strong value to win in straight sets once again.
