Matteo Arnaldi came from a set down to beat Tallon Griekspoor in the first-round of the French Open. Arnaldi was 6-3 up in the first set tiebreak but spurned three set points as the Dutchman went in front. Nevertheless, the Italian drew level in the second. The third set went to another tiebreak with Arnaldi saving a set point of his own this time as he took the lead. He clinched victory in the fourth, winning 6-7 (9) 6-3 7-6 (6) 6-3.
He now takes on 2021 finalist Stefanos Tsitispas for a place in round three. The Greek advanced after his first-round opponent Alexandre Muller was forced to retire in the second set, with Tsitsipas leading 6-2 3-0.
Arnaldi has rediscovered his form in recent weeks following a battle with injury, winning a Challenger title in Cagliari and reaching the third-round of the Italian Open. Tsitsipas required four sets to get past Arnaldi at Roland Garros two years ago, and he’s likely to be tested once again here.
