Matteo Arnaldi progressed to the third-round of the French Open as he beat 2021 finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets. The two players were level after the first two sets, but Arnaldi prevailed, winning 7-6 (2) 5-7 6-3 6-2. The Italian has struggled with injury in recent times, but he won a Challenger event in Cagliari at the start of this month and seems to have rediscovered his form at the highest level.
His next opponent is Raphael Collignon. He pulled off an upset in the previous round as he swept aside fifth seed Ben Shelton in straight sets. Collignon did not even face a break point as he won 6-4 7-5 6-4. This is the Belgian’s first main draw appearance at Roland Garros, and he is now through to the third-round of a major for the second time.
Arnaldi has greater tour-level experience compared to Collignon, but the latter can’t be underestimated after his success at Challenger level, along with his brilliant display to dismantle Shelton in the second-round.
