Jan-Lennard Struff will be desperate to turn his fortunes around at a tournament where he has a rich pedigree.
The veteran German has won just one of his last 13 matches as his wretched form threatens to see him drop out of the top 100.
The 35-year-old is a former finalist in Stuttgart and has been playing at the event since 2010.
His latest opponent will be an Italian 11 years his junior, who has posted some fine results this year, including a win over Novak Djokovic in Madrid.
The world number 36 should be an obvious favourite given his superior level of late as well as the fact he leads the head-to-head 1-0.
However, Arnaldi is highly inexperienced on grass and has only one tour-level win under his belt.
A second may well follow here but if Struff serves and volleys well, the Italian could be shocked if he doesn’t adapt to the surface quickly.
