Matteo Arnaldi has competed in just one grass court match heading into Wimbledon. He began in Stuttgart but lost to Jan-Lennard Struff in the first-round. The Italian was due to play at Queen’s Club and then Eastbourne a week later but was forced to withdraw from both as a result of an ankle injury. Despite these concerns, Arnaldi has expressed his desire to feature at the third major of the year.

He goes up against Botic van de Zandschulp in the first-round. The Dutchman has also seen his grass court season affected by injury. He pulled out of the Libema Open because of an abdominal problem. He made his return in qualifying for Mallorca but lost to Nishesh Basavareddy at the first stage.

They’ve met once before, at the Davis Cup two years ago with Van de Zandschulp winning on that occasion. There are major concerns over the fitness of both players, while neither is in strong form either. There is no clear favourite.
