Landaluce looked on course for a win in four sets as he went 4-1 up, but his compatriot roared back to force a decider. Nevertheless, the two-time Masters 1000 quarter-finalist outlasted him to win 6-3 4-6 6-2 6-7 (3) 6-4 after four hours and 30 minutes.
He now takes on Vit Kopriva, who was also involved in a five set match as he beat Corentin Moutet. The Czech was 4-1 down in the third set at one set apiece but reeled off the next five games to take the lead. Moutet would win the fourth, but Kopriva held his nerve to win 6-3 5-7 6-4 3-6 6-3 after four hours and 20 minutes.
