Martin Damm picked up a brilliant win in round one as he defeated Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets to advance. Hurkacz was seen as one of the favourites for the tournament, but he was well below his level as Damm took the first set on a tiebreak and broke for the first time in the middle of the second set to win 7-6 (5) 6-4 after one hour and 32 minutes.
He faces Roberto Bautista Agut next. The veteran dropped the first set but came back to win in three against Christopher O’Connell. The decider saw four consecutive breaks of serve at the start, but Bautista Agut crucially broke again in the 11th game and served it out to win 5-7 6-3 7-5 after two hours and 48 minutes. This was Bautista Agut’s first win of the season.
Damm will be encouraged by his level so far, having won his qualifying matches and defeated a two-time Masters champion in Hurkacz, but the experienced Bautista Agut is still a competitor and will be the favourite.
