Martin Damm secured his place in the main draw after comfortably beating dismantling Kimmer Coppejans in straight sets, before then mounting a fine comeback victory over Abdullah Shelbayh, winning 4-6 7-5 7-6(4). Holding a ranking of 104 in the world, Damm relies on his towering frame to dictate play with a massive first serve and heavy flat groundstrokes.
Ben Shelton was viewed as one of the favourites at Wimbledon, especially after his title at the Stuttgart Open a few weeks prior to the third major of the season. However, he suffered a first-round exit at SW19 as he was beaten by Otto Virtanen in a five set epic. It’s been a curious season for Shelton, as he’s won three titles, but also suffered a number of early exits at slams and Masters 1000 events.
Damm’s form from qualifying and massive serve should allow him to hold his own in the quick Washington conditions. Shelton is still a commanding favourite, but a tiebreak or two may be required.
