Marta Kostyuk looked set for a fifth quarter-final in succession as she took the first set against Iga Swiatek at the Canadian Open. However, the former world number one fought back to win in three. The Ukrainian has still enjoyed her best year on the tour by quite some distance, with her first two major semi-finals, along with a maiden WTA 1000 triumph at the Madrid Open.
She received a bye in the first-round and now faces Sofia Kenin. The 2020 Australian Open champion recovered from a poor start to beat Eva Lys in the previous round. Kenin lost five of the first six games as Lys took control, but the American found her level to win 1-6 6-3 6-3 after one hour and 41 minutes. That was her main draw victory outside of a Grand Slam since April.
Kenin does lead the head-to-head as she came from a set down to beat Kostyuk in Dubai last year, but the 24-year-old is the clear favourite this time around.
