Marta Kostyuk continued her positive run in Beijing as she got through to the round-of-16, losing to Jessica Pegula in three sets. The Ukrainian has won four of her last five matches, stretching back to the Billie Jean King Cup finals. She suffered a poor run of form during the summer, failing to win a match during the grass court season, but Kostyuk’s performances have improved and she can be a threat to anyone when she’s performing well. She has reached the quarter-finals of three 1000 events this season.
Karolina Muchova is her opponent in Wuhan. The Czech reached the final of the China Open last year but was unable to go that far this year as she also lost in the round-of-16 to Amanda Anisimova despite comfortably taking the first set. Muchova also got through to the quarter-finals of the US Open last month and will fancy her chances of a deep run in Wuhan.
They played each other for the first time in New York last month, with Muchova winning a tight round-of-16 match in three sets. There is little to separate the pair, and a deciding set is likely.
