Despite being ranked outside the top 150, Marketa Vondrousova went on an incredible run at the German Open. She beat Australian Open champion Madison Keys, two-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur and world number one Aryna Sabalenka to make the final. She then defeated qualifier Wang Xinyu to become the lowest ranked winner in the competition’s history. Vondrousova is a former champion here, having become the first unseeded woman to win the event in 2023 and is a threat to anyone on grass.
McCartney Kessler will be a very tough first-round opponent however, as the American has also found success in the lead up to this slam. She won her first title on grass at the Nottingham Open and her third on the WTA Tour after wins against the likes of Beatriz Haddad Maia, two-time winner Katie Boulter and Dayana Yastremska in the final.
Vondrousova brushed aside some top players in Berlin and may just have too much for Kessler despite her recent success.
