Marina Stakusic makes her return in Merida, having not featured on tour since retiring in the first-round against Priscilla Hon at the Australian Open. She was struggling with cramps as she trailed in the deciding set, and needed a wheelchair to leave the court. Stakusic had won the first set in the match and shown an impressive level of performance by winning all three of her qualifying matches to enter the main draw.
Stakusic plays Dayana Yastremska in round one. The Ukrainian has lost six of her ten matches so far this season. Her best result remains her first event of the year in Brisbane, as she reached the third-round. Yastremska was uncompetitive in Dubai as she was defeated in straight sets by Janice Tjen in the first-round.
Stakusic is only just making her return, but she is still likely to be competitive against Yastremska, who hasn’t been threatening this season up to this point.
